mILp understands the need and desire for a functional public transportation system. Research has shown a lack of affordable and accessible transportation options causes seniors and people living with disabilities to become geographically isolated and socially excluded. This affects not only individuals but also entire communities. It is simply not enough to offer opportunities within our community if there are prohibitive conditions, such as a lack of available, accessible, integrated, and affordable transportation, which prevents people from accessing their community.
Statewide, regional, and local needs assessments have consistently identified accessible, integrated, and affordable transportation as the single greatest unmet need. mILp’s consumers consistently ask for individual training and support for existing services and our participation in advocacy strategies to improve this unacceptable, isolating, and segregating circumstance.
Over the last three decades, we have actively pursued viable solutions to this vital issue. Last fall, mILp partnered with Capitol Taxi and launched the Helena Area Evening & Weekend Accessible, Affordable, and Integrated Taxi Voucher Program. This filled an unmet need in the area due to the City of Helena’s public transit service not operating after 6pm on weekdays, and is nonexistent on the weekends. We began providing 120 rides a month, and are now providing over 300 rides per month. For more information, check out accessibleride.org. We are implementing a similar service in Bozeman with HRDC and Greater Valley Taxi beginning July 2017.
